The Best Therapy

Ok I have a confession to make, when I found myself on an involuntary haidus from work ( aka I was laid off), I went stir crazy being in the house. I woke up the same day every morning, cleaned the house, applied to all the jobs I could find online, and then I found msyelf with nothing to do but think. Thinking led to feeling a little helpless so one day I decided to get up and go somewhere and do something. Where? I had no idea. So I just got in my car and drove. When I finally put the car in park, I was in the Macy's parking lot. Looking at clothes, usually exhausts me if I don't have a specific idea in mind. But the shoe department.... oh the shoe departement always excites me :) just to see what is new out there.

The shoe department was everything I wanted and needed at the time. It was bright, and comfortable chairs, there were other people around and of course the shoes! Now you might be thinking, who goes to the shoe department to seek refuge?.... a shoe lover. Pumps, sandals, boots...Oh my!! Even more than the shoes, being around the people and the energy was what I desired and I was not dissappointed. I would go into the shoe department, browse around, try on a few pairs of shoes and just sit for a while. Then it would happen, a window shopper would look on as I tried on a pair of 3" suede royal blue pumps and tell me that I must buy them. Or I would ask for a pair or silver 4" booties with a peep toe and older woman shopping for a pair for of comfortable conservative church shoes asks me how I am going to walk in these things! lol

Yes my weekly visits to the shoe department became my therapy. It was a place where I could talk to someone I didn't know and share a laugh or a smile. I could engage people, the way I had previously and proudly done at work. It was a way for me to remind myself of who I am and step out of my comfort zone to allow myself to do something new. Simply put, it made me forget about my immediate loss and feel better. Sometimes you can find peace in the most unlikely of places.
